How I Designed and Built the Website for www.notesfromnumber5.co.uk
Creating a brand is one thing—bringing it to life online is another.
When I began designing and building the website for www.notesfromnumber5.co.uk, I knew this wasn’t just about making a pretty site. It was about creating a digital home for a small business with a big personality—one that sells wax melts, diffusers, and scented sprays with love, care, and a sense of calm.
Understanding the Brand
Before I even opened a blank canvas, I spent time understanding the heart of Notes From Number 5. This wasn’t just another e-commerce store—it had a soul. The goal was to evoke that feeling of walking into a warm, beautifully-scented home. Everything had to feel intentional: from the tone of voice to the colour palette to how products were displayed.
We wanted customers to feel something from the moment they landed on the homepage.
Design That Speaks
I chose a soft, elegant colour palette inspired by natural tones—think calm beiges, subtle blush pinks, and warm greys. This was balanced with plenty of white space, so everything felt clean and easy to navigate.
Typography was just as important. I went with a combination of a modern serif for the logo and headings (to keep things classy) and a minimal sans-serif for the body text (to ensure readability). The fonts work together to create a blend of modern and comforting—just like the products themselves.
Building the Site
I built the site using Wix, making sure it was responsive across all devices. Mobile-first design was key, since most people browse and buy from their phones these days.
The product pages were built with care:
Each item has clear photography, with space to breathe.
Descriptions are simple, warm, and written to create a sensory experience.
I also added trust-building features like customer reviews, clean FAQs, and clear shipping info.
SEO basics were taken care of as well—keywords, image alt tags, meta descriptions—all the behind-the-scenes stuff that helps Google find us.
User Experience First
It was important to keep the path to purchase as simple as possible. A clear call-to-action ("Shop Now") leads visitors straight into the product categories. I used intuitive filtering options so customers can shop by scent or product type, and made checkout a friction-free process.
I also integrated Instagram to bring some life and community into the site—and to make it easy for visitors to follow the brand journey beyond the website.
Final Touches
Before launching, I ran tests to check speed, mobile responsiveness, and user flows. I even asked a few friends to try it out and give honest feedback.
The result? A website that feels just like Notes From Number 5—soft, warm, inviting, and made with care.
If you're starting a small business and want a website that truly reflects your brand, I'd love to chat. Whether it’s wax melts, web design, or something entirely different, I believe your website should tell your story beautifully.
